I’m super excited because I got this book, Something Wilder by Christina Lauren, as an ARC and this book will be out in May. I’ve been seeing Christina Lauren books all over Bookstagram and I was a bit intrigued. When I got this book as an ARC, I was really excited! It involves treasure hunting and hiking/camping in the desert. There were some twists that I wasn’t expecting that’s for sure. So just what did I think of this book? Read on to find out!

Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession…or much money in the bank. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness–and leave him there.
Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Ready to leave the past behind him, Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily Wilder is all business, drawing a clear line in the sand: it’s never going to happen.
But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. There’s a chance to right the wrongs–of Duke’s past and their own–but only if Leo and Lily can confront their history and work together. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives and hearts on the adventure of a lifetime.
My first Christina Lauren book! I thought it was nice. Terry was such a jerk and I knew Bradley was a jerk as well with how he was acting with the money. My favorite character was Walter. He was such a sweet guy and if he was real is want to date him! I identified with the trauma Lily felt in her life.
I also identified with Lily with the fact that she doesn’t want a man to take care of her. Now, yes I understand that the man should take control (not be controlling) and he shouldn’t be a lazy slob but I feel weird when someone has to fix my problem. My crush is kind of like that. He’s a mister fix it and for me, again where I feel where Lily was coming from, I feel like it should be more of a hold my hand while I figure it out. I did like that she knew when to give in because sometimes our pride can get in the way. We need to know when to give up control.
Something else that I identified with Lily was never feeling like enough. In the book, her mom left her, her dad was always somewhere else chasing treasures instead of raising her and being fully in her life, and Leo left her with no explanation (I won’t reveal the actual cause. You’ll just have to read to find out why). She said that “a tiny voice” took “up permanent residence in her mind, telling her she wasn’t worth it”. Like geez! I felt seen. And Leo was amazing with her! He didn’t give up on her. He told her that “just because the thoughts are loud or constant doesn’t mean they’re right”.
Speaking of Leo, he asked a really good question, which is something I often think about . He said “I’m not sure which is worse…losing someone suddenly, or after a prolonged illness”. I mean either way, the person being gone is a tough situation to deal with but I love how they both were coming to terms with the trauma that they’ve both experienced in their life.
The thing that threw the book off to me was the parts with the robbers and the Terry situation. Oh and the scene at the bar. They were chased by the bartender because of something and I was like is this really a proper response for that? Something happens and I was like, wait what? Where is this coming from? So that to me took the rating down. I would’ve gave it a 4 star but I couldn’t get over those things!
If you like outdoor adventure or treasure hunting and second chance romance, this book is for you! It’s a solid book. Wasn’t the greatest or life changing book ever but it was alright. It wasn’t bad! I do want to read their other book Love and other Words.
I give this 3/5 stars!
