Books From Your Favorite Girl Bosses!

Hey y’all!

I don’t know about you but I love me some personal-development books. Actually, I had a slight issue to where I would only read personal-development books for a while. I literally had to force myself to read a book of fiction (actually I think it was either Me Before You or Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that broke me out of reading self-development).

How did I get into reading these books? Adrienne Bosh actually! She posted a pink book with a pink pen and I thought it was so cute so I clicked the link to see what book it was. It was Cara Alwill’s Sparkle book! It was also during a time when she was giving out the kindle version of the book (she does that from time to time). Y’all, I was hooked! For a while, I only read her books. That was because every time she’d have her book available, I’d grab it because I enjoyed them so much.

The women featured in this post all hold a special place in my heart and hopefully they will change your life for the better as well. From learning about death to learning about how to handle money to how to live a life that kicks butts. Each women offer something different and again hopefully, you will love them just as much (or more) than I do!

Sparkle: The Girl’s Guide to Living a Deliciously Dazzling, Wildly Effervescent, Kick-Ass Life

As women, we have become professional self-critics. We’ve become so convinced by society that we need to attain a level of perfection that just isn’t real. Instead, why not focus on all the fabulous qualities we already possess? There is so much to celebrate when we look at all our accomplishments. In this straight-up girlfriend’s guide, lifestylist and wellness coach Cara Alwill Leyba encourages women to discover what makes them sparkle so that they can design the lives they desire and deserve. So raise your glass and toast yourself. You’re about to start shimmering, shining and dazzling every day Because isn’t everything better when it sparkles?

Review: This book personally means so much to me because it has planted the seed in my mind that I was worthy of special things in life. It made me believe almost anything was possible if I truly put my mind to something and to never settle! I’m so grateful for her and this book. This book was the first time that I’ve heard of with self-publishing a book She was rejected 19 times and decided to self-publish her book and it has changed her life. She chose herself. It has changed my life and if you read it, it will change yours as well!

This book will change the way you view your weight and yourself forever. You will walk away feeling empowered, inspired, and downright sexy (and probably craving a glass of bubbly). You will learn how to celebrate yourself and your body. You will learn to make your health a priority, always. And most importantly – you will learn to love yourself, exactly as you are. So get ready to embark on a complete dieting and lifestyle overhaul, sister. You are now on The Champagne Diet “The Champagne Diet will resonate with every woman with it’s realistic and simple approach to dieting. Alwill delivers a personal, relatable, and funny guide to shedding pounds without deprivation.” – Kim Barnouin Co-Author, Skinny Bitch

Review: This book is actually what her blog was titled. She was looking for a low cal drink and someone mentioned that champagne was like under 100 calories. She was sold and soon the champagne diet started to take on a whole new meaning. It was used as an outlook on your life for you to elevate your life in different ways and to help you hold your head up high. I enjoyed this book a lot!

Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur

A few years ago, I made a crazy claim in the first edition of Girl Code that in today’s competitive marketplace, the fiercest thing a female entrepreneur can do is to support other women. Something dynamic happens when women genuinely show up for each other. When we lose the facades, cut the bullsh*t, and truly have each other’s backs. When we stop pretending everything is perfect, and show the messy, beautiful parts of ourselves and our work–which all look awfully similar. When we talk about our fears, our missteps, and our breakdowns. And most importantly, when we share our celebrations, our breakthroughs, and our solutions. I’m convinced that there’s no reason to hoard information, connections, or insight. Wisdom is meant to be shared, so let’s start sharing what we’ve learned to make each other better. Let’s start building each other up. Let’s live up to our potential and start ruling the world. Girl Code is a roadmap for female entrepreneurs, professional women, “side hustlers” (those with a day job plus a part-time small business), and anyone in between. This book won’t teach you how to build a multimillion-dollar company. It won’t teach you about systems or finance. But it will teach you how to build confidence in yourself, reconnect with your “why,” eradicate jealousy, and ultimately learn the power of connection. Because at the end of the day, that’s what life and business are all about.

Review: At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to buy this book but in the end I’m glad I did! It gave me a sense of belief that women can support each other in their business ventures. It gave me the sense of belief that I can become an entrepreneur, although I wasn’t sure at the time what kind I’d be. I mean I’ve always wanted to be an author but I started to believe that I can make blogging my career. Now I have an Etsy shop! I loved this book so much, that when she re-released it with an actual publisher, I bought my bestie a copy of it!

Sarah Ordo (these are just a few of her books)

Thirty As F***: 30 Things I Learned During My Quarter-Life Crisis

A lot of people treat aging like it’s the freakin’ plague. Young women dread thirty like it’s a death sentence. It’s a little bit dramatic, a little bit crazy, and a whole lot of unnecessary. Cue the quarter-life crisis. I’ve decided to flip the script on this attitude instead. Thirty has brought me more knowledge, growth, and happiness than I ever could have imagined was possible. Thirty is JUST the beginning. Thirty as F*** is the kinda hilarious yet oddly profound journal of my quarter-life crisis. In the book, I’m sharing the thirty things I learned about life before turning thirty. Packed full of personal realizations, hilarious experiences, and a bunch of hella good truth bombs, this book will have every woman out there laughing, grabbing the tissues, and saying “YES!” whether she is eighteen years old, thirty years old, or eighty years old. We’re gonna cover everything from cellulite to eyelash extensions to realizing you are becoming your mother. But we’re also gonna talk about more important things like being okay alone, getting past your biggest disappointments, realizing the kind of love you deserve as a woman, and learning how to say “NO.” We’re gonna cover ALL the f*cking things.

Review: I gobbled this book up when it came out. Since we’re around the same age, this book resonated with me so much! At the time this book came out, she was about to get married and me as a single gal, I just felt seen. When I see a lot of people getting married and having kids, I felt so behind (I still do to be honest). She shares her life lessons in this book and it would be a great read if you’re turning thirty or if you’re in your early thirties as well. It was such a fun book!

The many areas of my life that I changed are outlined in the chapters, offering a blueprint for others to do the same in their own lives. Innerbloom will leave you feeling empowered, inspired, and ready to create your best life possible.

Review: This is actually her second book but this is the first one of hers that I’ve read. There were some pretty good gems in here but I’ll be honest, some of the stuff she talked about in this book was mentioned in her first book, Sober As F***, so it was a lot of repeated information. This book is very much still valuable.

Review: I gobbled this book up pretty quickly and I believe that at the time, it was what I needed to show the world that I was okay and that I didn’t have time for toxicity in my life. I enjoyed it and you will too if you need a good kick in the pants! Is it my absolute favorite from her? No but I still love it. Give it a read! You may like it too!

Real Money Answers for Every Woman: How to Win the Money Game with or Without a Man

Now widely available, the popular, award-winning, self-published guide to help women get out of debt, rebuild their credit, and fulfill their financial dreams. Patrice Washington rationalized her excessive spending. “I work hard, I deserve this.” “I bought it on sale.” But at twenty-two, the recent college graduate was $18,000 in debt and sinking fast. It was time to take control. Patrice educated herself about finance, adopted a new attitude toward money, and most importantly, adjusted her spending habits. By twenty-five she was debt free–and used the wisdom she gained to start her own successful real estate and mortgage brokerage–and by twenty-nine started her own financial counseling business. Patrice’s former bad spending habits aren’t unique, and women find themselves in financial hot water for a host of reasons. Women earn less than men and have to stretch those hard-earned dollars further. They contribute more to caregiving and aging parents, live longer, and many–including most African American women–are choosing to stay single. Real Money Answers for Every Woman teaches you how to take responsibility for your financial future, whether you’re just starting out or need a fresh start. In a handy Q & A format, it offers relatable and easy to understand and implement advice on everything from managing credit cards, home ownership, and student loans to affordable childcare and even negotiating for a higher salary. Following Patrice’s practical advice, you’ll learn to form “wealthy” habits, establish an “opportunity fund,” stop collecting STUFF that causes debt, and discover the freedom that comes from feeling financially secure.

Review: This is one book I will return to again and again. This was the first time I’ve seen money mantras or affirmations and you better believe I went throughout that book and wrote down as many as I can. This is a great book for all women. Trust me, you need it!

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons Lessons From the Crematory

Armed with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre, Caitlin Doughty took a job at a crematory and turned morbid curiosity into her life’s work. She cared for bodies of every color, shape, and affliction, and became an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. In this best-selling memoir, brimming with gallows humor and vivid characters, she marvels at the gruesome history of undertaking and relates her unique coming-of-age story with bold curiosity and mordant wit. By turns hilarious, dark, and uplifting, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes reveals how the fear of dying warps our society and will make you reconsider how our culture treats the dead (San Francisco Chronicle).
