Ask I write this post, I’m currently sitting in a bus terminal lobby, waiting for my bus to take me home for a day visit to Miami (I haven’t seen my grandma since August). It also happens to be the first of the year! Now this is not going to be one of those posts about “new year new me” or about new year’s resolutions. No! This is a post about starting over again. Starting life anew each and every day. I am one who absolutely does not believe in New Year’s resolutions. Sorry I just don’t. It (in my opinion) is just a way to procrastinate change. Do it now! You literally don’t know what tomorrow may bring so why wait til tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year? Will goals take time? Of course! But like if your goal is to be healthier in 2019, then don’t wait til the first. The choice to make healthier choices should’ve started when you decided that goal for the year. It doesn’t even have to cost money. For example, on YouTube there are lots of free workout videos, walking around the block is free, drinking tap water is free…do you see where I’m going with this? It doesn’t have to be these huge changes but it can be something small. Even taking out five minutes of your day to meditate or practice self-care can make a world of difference. Set small attainable goals and don’t beat yourself up if you fall from time to time. Change isn’t immediate and if anyone tells you it is, that person is full of crap!
2018 for the most part has been okay. I was pushed past my comfort zone: I traveled to Orlando and went to Universal Studios by myself to go to the Wizarding World of Harry potter, I jumped in a lake (while wearing a life vest of course) and did some things I wasn’t totally comfortable with (but oh so glad I did) for a student with a visual impairment, I passed my certification exam to teach grades 6-12 ELA, I adopted my kitten Gryffindor (whom I absolutely adore) and I’ve been improving my credit score! I also had some lousy moments too where I felt like a complete hopeless failure. I would be a lie if I said that today, I was in the best of spirits. I am not. Emotionally, this winter season has been a tough one. However, I’m not going to let my funk get in the way of a great mindset for the year to come (or current I should say). One huge goal for me? To go on a date (especially with my crush that I’m pining over currently) and I guess to come into my higher purpose or to grow as a person. Heck! I’m moving into a new apartment in a couple of weeks!
There’s nothing wrong with starting over and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t want to change for the new year. I’m asking that you proceed with true intentions and with a full heart. Don’t get discouraged as you stumble to make your goals. You can do this! I know you can. Here’s to a great and big year for us! I pray that it goes well and makes you a stronger and wiser person. Here’s to starting over and new beginnings. Love ya!
